Small Chinese He Tong figurine, in stone, China. 16th/19th century. Small figurine in beige/sand-colored stone, depicting a lying child with large rounded head, crossed arms and hinted clothing. The motif, also called “the lucky calamity child” (he tong), is a classic Chinese symbol of luck and fertility, known from jade and stone sculptures since the Tang dynasty. The surface shows mineral deposits and age-related patina. The material is likely limestone or alabaster.
