Kelvin & Hughes azimuth compass. United Kingdom. Approx. 1947-1966.

The azimuth compass in brass is made according to Lord Kelvin's pattern. The instrument consists of a ring with two handles. On the ring sits a bezel. The actual mirror has a prism in a brass frame, which is adjusted with two rifled thumb screws. One of the thumb screws is engraved with an arrow. There are two half-round dark filter glasses, and under the prism sits a lens. Stamped "KELVIN & HUGHES Ltd" on the ring and numbered "No 30546" next to the bezel.

When mounted on the compass dial, the circle is used to take bearings of landmarks and celestial bodies, as the object and the compass rose's degree division can be seen simultaneously.
