Impressionist watercolor study of two galloping horses. Unknown artist. Circa 20th Century. Unsigned.
A lively and energetic study in watercolor, of two horses in full gallop with impressive security and movement. The brown horse dominates the picture plane with a warm, golden color tone, while the grey horse presses on from behind, both with manes and tails flowing in speed.
The loose, confident brushstrokes reveal a skilled hand with deep knowledge of the horse's anatomy and movement. The background is treated with broad, impressionist washes of yellow and green, creating a sense of open land and sunlight without overpowering the motif.
The work bears the mark of being an impressionist study, spontaneous and immediate, and precisely for that reason, it exudes an authenticity and vitality that is often lost in more finished compositions. Helvig Kinch has been debated, but we do not think the similarities match exactly, so we can attribute this to an unknown artist, likely European, circa early-mid 20th century.
