About the artist: “ Hakon Bagger Mielche (21. October 1904 in Fensmark – 22. October 1979 in Odense) was a Danish travel book author, journalist, draftsman, and adventurer, who was a member of the Adventurers' Club. Mielche has published a large number of books that have been translated into more than 13 languages. He traveled for a long time for the weekly magazine Familie-Journalen. Mielche, who was the son of a glassmaker at Holmegaard Glassworks, attended Atterup School under Jens Larsen, took his real exam from Haslev Gymnasium and was trained as a visual artist at Académie Colarossi in Paris. In the years that followed, he had various jobs as a sailor 1920-21, circus artist 1922-28, advertising draftsman and theater painter 1928-33, became a collaborator at Jyllands-Posten 1933-41 and was traveling correspondent at Aller Press from 1941. He participated in the Monsun's Pacific Expedition 1933-35, in an expedition to Ildlandet 1936, was war correspondent in Spain 1937. Under the occupation 1940-45 he was forced to stay in Denmark due to travel ban. This led to him in these years occupied with writing biographies about Danes who had lived an adventurous life abroad. Examples of this are the books Nick Nielsens wonderful journey and Around the world with breakfast bread, as well as the autobiographical From my pillowcase. In 1945 he became SHAEF war correspondent 1945, sailed with a sailing ship along Columbus' route 1948 and was in Antarctica 1949. Mielche was press chief on the Galathea 2-deep sea expedition in the years 1950-52. On this expedition he wrote the books Galathea sets sail, Galathea in the east, and Galathea returns home. He received the Galathea Medal from the Royal Danish Geographical Society and was Knight of the Dannebrog.” Source: Wikipedia.
