The Funnel period was part of the Bell Beaker culture and took place around 3500–3000 BC. During this period, farmers built many dysses, which were burial sites made of large stones. A dyss typically consisted of a burial chamber surrounded by large supporting stones and a roof stone on top. The dead were buried with items such as flint axes, ceramics, and necklaces. Dysses were likely used for rituals and as communal burial sites. Thousands of dysses are found in Denmark, but they are particularly concentrated in areas with many stones and good agricultural opportunities. The dysses show that religion, community, and ancestor worship were of great importance.
