The Corded Ware culture existed in Denmark around 4000–2800 B.C. and was one of the first farming cultures. People cultivated grains, raised cattle, sheep and pigs, but also hunted and fished. The culture is named after its characteristic clay vessels with a funnel-shaped opening. The Corded Ware people built large burial mounds such as tumuli and megalithic tombs. Many different axes from the culture have been found. Axes were used as tools for tasks such as woodworking and forest clearance, but some may also have had significance as valuable objects or symbols and others were used for combat.
