Antique Norwegian Viking Dragon Style Pedestal Desk. From 1880-1915. Beautiful little desk with exquisite hand-carved ornamentation on the front. Bronze ornamented lock on the drawer and lid. Behind the lids hide archive drawers. Provenance: Danish silversmith Hans Christian Matthiasen (H.C. Matthiasen - Nykøbing F 1903 - 1957) brought this piece back from Norway and it has been passed down through the family. History: The Dragon Style was a Norwegian national romantic style, particularly popular from around 1880 to 1910, and is inspired by the ornamentation of stave churches and Viking Age art. Furniture like this was designed with inspiration from finds such as the Gokstad and Oseberg ships and stave church carvings, which can also be seen in the Viking-like motifs on the drawers and panels. They were produced during the period when Scandinavian national romanticism was at its peak, and the furniture was meant to signal solidity, history, and pride in the country's heritage. Dimensions: H: 77 B:125 D:69 Height to underside of desk: 64 cm. Condition: The furniture is in good condition, and comes with two keys, which work, but the locks can be a bit stiff.
