Antique French Barometre Anéroïde. France. End of 19th Century

French barometer in massive, hand-forged copper dome with visible clockwork. The dial is designed for the Scandinavian market with Danish/Norwegian weather terminology (Storm, Unstable, Beautiful Weather, Very Dry), and bears the French patent marking “Breveté S.G.D.G.”, used 1844-1968. The barometer is used to measure atmospheric air pressure and predict the weather forecast. It measures the weight of the air to indicate whether the weather will improve (high pressure) or deteriorate (low pressure). Low air pressure (often indicates turbulent or rainy weather) High air pressure (often indicates clear and dry weather).
