Antique Burmese “Devi” figure, from the 19th century. Originally from Mandalay province in Burma. The devi sculpture is carved in wood. It is wearing lavish robes and a crown, has its hands folded in front of its chest and stands on a base. The figure is red lacquered with mirror. History: In Burma, secondary figures like this one are called “devi”. They are placed in front of Buddhist altars, pagodas, or shrines. They originally depicted the Hindu gods at a lower level. In Burma, they became part of the symbolic repertoire of Burmese Theravada Buddhism. Dimensions: approx. 57x15x10 cm. Condition: The base is not flat, therefore it has a hook on the back, to stabilize it or hang it on the wall, otherwise see pictures.
