Antique Burmese “Devi” figurine, from the 1800s. Originally from Mandalay province in Burma. The Devi sculpture is carved from wood. It is adorned with lavish clothing and a crown, has hands folded in front of the chest and stands on a base. Figurine is red lacquered with a mirror finish. History: In Burma, secondary figurines like this one are called “devi” They are placed in front of Buddhist altars, pagodas, or sanctuaries. They originally depicted lower-level Hindu gods. In Burma, they became part of the symbolic repertoire of Burmese Theravada Buddhism. Measurements: approx.57x15x10 cm. Condition: The base is not flat, therefore it has a hook on the back, to stabilize it or hang it on the wall, otherwise see images.
