African Billao knife with scabbard. From Somalia. Early/mid 20th century

Billao (or Billaawe) is a Somali dagger with a characteristic asymmetrical blade shape, toothed pommel with one or three tines and a leather- or hide scabbard. The handle is built up of alternating red and clear discs, separated by brass bands, with a three-pronged brass pommel and central copper cap. The asymmetrical steel blade has geometric engraving along the ribs. Original leather scabbard with engraved decoration and metal fittings.

Provenance: originates from the collection of a Danish nurse who, from approximately 1947-60, was part of the UN's vaccination program in Africa and Asia. In connection with this, she acquired this knife.
