Absolutely fantastic Norwegian Hourglass from the 18th century, in beautifully patinated ornamented, partially gilded wood. Duration: Approx. 1/2 hour.

History of the hourglass: an instrument for measuring time, consisting of two glass flasks, with sand flowing from the upper to the lower flask. It was probably used as early as the 11th century, but evidence of its existence dates back to the 14th century. Hourglasses were especially useful at sea, where ordinary clocks could not be used due to the motion of the ship. They were also used in churches and industry, and as symbols of the passage of time and the transience of life.

Based on the provenance and shape, this hourglass dates to the 18th century. This hourglass has a glass that consists of two separate glass flasks that are joined together in the middle. This is typical for hourglasses made before the 19th century. Provenance: Belongs to a large Zealand collection of antiques and antiquities. Dimensions: approx. 23.5x10 cm. Condition: very fine condition, the hourglass has at some point undergone a professional restoration according to the provenance, otherwise see pictures.
