She came from the powerful Colonna family and married the marquise Ferrante Francesco d'Avalos. After his death in 1525 she devoted herself more to literature and religion. She wrote mainly sonnets about love, sorrow, faith, and spirituality. Colonna was also part of the contemporary intellectual environment and knew several influential artists and thinkers. She had a close friendship with Michelangelo, who admired her poetry and made drawings for her.
